Sony has officially purchased independent game developer Insomniac Games, best known for last year’s Spider-Man for PS4. Insomniac will become an exclusive PlayStation developer, Sony says.
The California-based studio was founded in 1994, and has worked with Sony on some of its biggest titles such as Ratchet & Clank and Resistance. Insomniac has also worked with other big game companies like Microsoft, which published the colorful open-world game Sunset Overdrive.
Spider-Man PS4 has gone on to be its most well-known title, becoming one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games of all time, and the fastest-selling superhero game in the United States. As Kotaku mentioned in their report, a sequel to the 2018 game will likely be put in development for the PlayStation 5.
With its purchase of Insomniac, Sony now has 14 internal studios, which also include Sucker Punch Productions, and Naughty Dog Entertainment.
