Earlier today, Deadline confirmed that one of Disney Channel’s most popular original series, Lizzie McGuire, is getting a reboot as a new series on the upcoming streaming platform, Disney+.
Although it’s a new series, fans can still expect plenty of familiar faces. Terri Minsky, the original series’ creator, is behind this new one and Hilary Duff is set to return to her title role as Lizzie McGuire. There’s been no confirmation to whether any other original cast members will be returning for the new project.
The original Lizzie McGuire series was centered around 13-year-old Lizzie who tries to fit in with the kids in her middle school. The series debuted in 2001 and was an immediate success, launching Duff as both a popular actress and a triple-platinum-selling music artist. The sitcom aired for four seasons and spawned a feature film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, which ended up earning $55 million at the global box office.
Expansion plans for the Lizzy McGuire franchise began as early as 2003 and included a second movie and an ABC comedy series that would follow Lizzie in high school. These plans came to a halt when Duff and Disney’s negotiations began to fall through.
This new series will portray Lizzie McGuire as a 30-year-old millennial as she attempts to navigate her new life in New York City. Like the original series, it will include an animated version of Lizzie who offers commentary on what Lizzie is really thinking.
Duff can currently be seen as a series regular in the TV Land comedy series Younger, which was recently renewed for a seventh season.
