Taika Waititi in Talks to Join James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

This is shaping up to be the weirdest DC film yet…

As if James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad wasn’t out there enough, Deadline has learned that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is in talks to join the film’s cast.

There is no word yet on who he’ll be playing, nor anything on how big the role is. Insiders mention that there’s a table reading for the DC sequel on Sept. 11 with production starting Sept. 23 for a Aug. 6, 2021 release.

Waititi is currently promoting his Fox Searchlight anti-hate satire fall film festival comedy Jojo Rabbit (opening Oct. 18) and beginning work on Next Goal Wins, his next directorial for the studio. He’ll be attending TIFF this year for the North American premiere of Jojo Rabbit, and will start working on Thor: Love and Thunder in the first quarter of 2020.

Waititi would join a growing cast that includes Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag).

New additions to the cast include Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher), Flula Borg, Steve Agee (King Shark) and Nathan Fillion.

Gunn wrote the script to The Suicide Squad. Chuck Roven and Peter Safran are producing.
