Todd Phillips in Talks to Return as Director for ‘Joker’ Sequel

It’s happening. WB and DC Comics are developing a sequel to the massively successful Joker.

In a new report from THR, Todd Phillips is reportedly in talks to return as co-writer and director for the Joker sequel. Scott Silver, who co-wrote the first film with Phillips, is also expected to return.

The report notes that Warner Bros apparently has sequel options in place for Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, but there was no mention of him being in talks to star in the sequel. Given that Phoenix has remained open to the idea of playing the character again, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him reprise his acclaimed role.

Joker has become a surprise juggernaut at the box office, raking in over a billion dollars, and becoming DC’s fourth film to reach the coveted milestone. The film is also the most profitable comic book movie of all time, as it was made with a low budget of around $50-60 million.

That’s not all though. THR also notes that Phillips has proposed the idea of developing more out-of-the-box comic book origin movies based on DC Canon. At first, WB chief Toby Emmerich balked at the idea; but a billion dollars later may have changed that.

There is no word yet on which DC villains Phillips and co. may tackle next, although Lex Luthor has been a favourite amongst the rumor mill and with fans.
