‘Captain Marvel 2’ In Development With ‘WandaVision’ Writer Megan McDonnell

Marvel Studios has been mostly quiet about the future of Captain Marvel in the MCU, but that has changed tonight.

Captain Marvel 2 is officially in development, with WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell in final negotiations to write the script. A search is underway for a female director to helm the sequel. The new story will be set in present day, and will follow Carol Danvers’ adventures post-Endgame.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-wrote and directed the 2019 billion-dollar hit hit, will not return to helm the sequel. Insiders say that the duo is in talks with Marvel about potentially directing a Disney+ series.

The studio is eyeing a 2022 release date for the sequel. Marvel has already announced that Black Panther 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will also be hitting theatres that year.

The first film, which starred Brie Larson as the titular hero, follows Carol Danvers as she learns about her past and becomes Captain Marvel after Earth is caught in the center of a galactic conflict between two alien civilizations.

This is the first mention of a Captain Marvel sequel since its initial announcement at 2019’s Comic-Con, where Kevin Feige briefly said that the second film is happening:

“We didn’t even mention that we’re making Black Panther 2 and we didn’t mention that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is coming. We didn’t even have time to talk about Captain Marvel 2, by the way. I didn’t even have time to talk about the Fantastic Four. And there’s no time left to talk about mutants.”

Megan McDonnell is a relatively new writer, whose first major credit will be Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series WandaVision. For Marvel to tap the writer to helm a sequel to one of its biggest films ever, it not only shows a vote confidence in her, but also in the level of quality we can expect from WandaVision.
