For their next attempt at transforming animated classics into live-action films, Disney will be setting its sights on Bambi.
The studio has hired Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider) and Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Chaos Walking) to write the screenplay for the film. Depth of Field, the production banner behind the popular indie The Farewell, will be producing the new remake.
The original movie, released in 1942, told the touching story of a young fawn named Bambi as he comes of age along with his two best friends, a rabbit named Thumper and a skunk named Flower.
Disney is said to view the upcoming Bambi adaptation as a type of “companion piece” to its previous remakes, The Jungle Book and The Lion King. The last two live-action remakes, Jon Favreau’s Lion King and Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin, both earned over a billion dollars at the box office. The next remakes scheduled to be released are The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey, and David Lowrey’s take on Peter Pan titled Peter and Wendy.
Depth of Field is already working on another Disney live-action remake as it is currently in active development on Robert Zemeckis’ Pinocchio.
Robertson-Dworet and Beer have both been hot commodities in the screenwriting with upcoming credits that range from Warner Bros.’ Hello Kitty to Fox/Disney’s Andy Weir adaptation of Artemis to Universal’s female Fast & Furious spinoff.
