Gareth Edwards is finally making his return to the big screen, as the Rogue One director has found his next project.
According to Variety, New Regency is set to bankroll and produce a new untitled sci-fi film written and directed by Edwards. Kiri Hart, who also produced Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with Edwards, will serve as a producer on the film.
Insiders say that the original story will be set in the near future, but no other details were revealed at this time. Casting is already underway with the plan being to begin shooting this summer.
Edwards first gained widespread recognition for Monsters, an independent film in which he served as writer, director, cinematographer, and visual effects artist. In 2014, he followed it up with his first blockbuster, Godzilla, and in 2016, he helmed the first Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One.
Since working with Disney and Lucasfilm, Edwards has taken his time in choosing his next project. Upon coming up with this new sci-fi story, New Regency reportedly jumped at the chance to take the mystery project to the market.
