Judge Sentences Harvey Weinstein to 23 Years in Prison

The trial of Harvey Weinstein is coming to a close, as the disgraced former movie mogul has been sentenced to 23 years in jail for rape and sexual assault charges.

The decision was handed down by Judge James Burke. A jury convicted Weinstein of committing a Criminal Sexual Act in the first degree and third-degree rape. Burke also said that Weinstein will register as a sex offender.

Weinstein’s team has already said that they will appeal the jury’s decision to convict him on two of the five charges he faced. For the first-degree count of criminal sexual act, Weinstein received 20 years in prison plus five years of supervised release. For the third-degree rape, he was given three years in prison.

Weinstein’s attorney Donna Rotunno tried to tell the judge that Weinstein should get a shorter sentence because he has a “long list of illnesses.” Burke didn’t care (not like he should anyways), and gave Weinstein a punishment fit for the monster that he is.

I think it’s safe to say this is a win. Not only for the women who suffered at the hands of this piece of sh*t, but for the entire #MeToo movement. It was the Weinstein story that really opened the floodgates on this campaign, and him receiving jail time is something we can all celebrate.
